Happy Mother's Day | Main | rent-a-negro.com May 11, 2003Homemade PizzaFridays are usually pizza night around our house. Recently, to cut back on some of the costs of things, I started making homemade pizzas again. Last week I made 2 batches of whole wheat crusts and froze one so that I would have no easy excuse to NOT make pizzas. This was the one for the kids. Cheese and turkey sausage. Not the most perfectly round crust, but eh. We made one for us with feta cheese, oninion, green pepper and... I think that's it. Yummy.

Our house is a huge fan of homemade pizzas. We make one 16" with varying options on it, depending on our mood.

My grandmother made homemade pizzas for us as kids and we would actually be upset if she tried to have something delivered. I recently made some for my bunch and they have been begging for them ever since. It's a win-win situation, the kids love it and it cheap!

We did the same thing a couple of years ago. The recipe is very easy and we make it with a bread maker, but it can be done by hand. It makes 2 sm-med thin crusts. The recipe is as follows.
2 cups of flour (any flour)
2/3 c water (luke warm)
2 Tbsp oil (any oil)
1/2 tsp salt
1/2 tsp sugar
1 tsp dry active yeast
If you using a bread maker, put all ingredients in the pan first. Add flour, sugar, and salt. Make a well and put yeast in it. Use dough setting.
If doing by hand, add yeast to warm water and set aside. Mix together all dry ingredients. Add liquid and oil. Knead together thouroughly. Grease dough ball, cover with damp towel and set aside to rise for at least an hour.
To build pizza, roll out dough to desired likeness, add toppings and bake at 350 degrees for 15-20 minutes (until cheese is golden brown).
Tips: You can buy an uncoated ceramic tile at home improvement stores for less than a dollar. It is the same as a pizza stone. Just sprinkle with a little cornmeal before laying pizza down.
Letting your dough "cure" for more than an hour gives your pizza that pub/pizzaria taste.
Coat the crust with fat before topping keeps the under dough moist and the crust crispy and golden.
