American Idol Goodies | Main | Bob Hope Turns 100 May 20, 2003Self-Destructing Disney DVDDisney Makes self-destructing DVD, hoping to launch a movie rental program. Once the DVD is opened and exposed to oxygen, it starts to decompose (???), making it unreadable after about 48 hours - the usual time a rental is checked out for. Soooo, you don't have to return it, you toss it, I guess. And for those of you who run out of time to watch your rental, I guess you'd be outta luck. Hmm. Weird. What do you think?

I think that sounds incredibly wasteful and unless they're going to recycle them somehow (which I doubt will happen) it seems totally irresponsible to create more landfill fodder.

I'm totally on board with the landfill angle. How wasteful - this puts them on board with AOL in my opinion, in terms of ridiculous, non-accountable putting-crap-out-there-ness. There's just no reason for it.

Ditto on the landfill thing. What a waste.

I'm with everyone else on this one. That's a pretty lame idea.

An environmental disaster... But from Disney, that somehow doesn't suprise me...
You can count me in on the list of folks who will be sure NOT to rent any of these discs!

Sounds like a big waste to me as well. I think that's sneaky with the late-fees. Don't movie places like to collect late fees? I know our local movie shop charges more for the late fee than the movie. I personally would be opposed to the self-destructing DVD because I procrastinate like there is no tomorrow. :P

I try to teach my children responsibility. Showing them that purchasing something that you don't get to keep, breaks itself when you don't use it fast enough, and is only created so you don't have to return a movie that you would have otherwise borrowed (i.e., rentals) is something I would NOT do! I applaud the creative minds that designed such a product but, as a mother, would hope my children's creativity would not develop such irresponsible waste!

I think that I would probably rent one just to see what it was like, but I agree ~ it's pretty wasteful. I'm surprised that they didn't think of the environmental angle to their "invention." This technology would be cool if used in some other way, though ~ I am not sure how, but it just seems like a waste! :(

Sounds good in theory, but in reality it's just a waste. Count me out.

I dont get it how is it going to work.......So I mean you buy a DVD for 29.99 is that how much it will cost to rent one since its just worthless after 48hrs???? Im so confused

No, no. It's a rental. You rent it and just don't have to return it, because it's "junk" after so many hours.
You know, if you could *reuse* the CD, maybe that would be better. But for it to be just junk is definitely a waste.
