Making Doughnuts

I found this recipe for doughnuts and we're making some. I'll post some pictures of the finished product, but don't expect perfection.

OK, so we successfully made some doughnuts. Here are some pictures. Click any of them for the larger version.

They turned out pretty good, although I was a little nervous because some were a bit doughy in the center and the recipe involves eggs. They are darker, too, because I used a majority of whole wheat flour (a staple in this house), and a bit of cocoa powder. And I don't have a picture of use eating becauase it was a regular old feeding frenzy.

I'd like to make these again at some point, but boy, my stomach feels like lead and I'm sure to have a heart attack within the hour.

Sugar High

Thierry Henry will be missing for the next two games because of his groin injury....

We were wondering why he wasn't in the game the other day, not realizing it was due to an injury. Henry is one of my favorite players. I hope he will be back soon.

. . .

We got these cookies at Sam's yesterday, the kids love them. A multi-pack of chocolate chip, macadamia nut/white chocolate and oatmeal raisin. The mac nut are my favorite. Anyway, so the kids come home from church and want a cookie. Fine. They have one. Can we have another?. Ok, one more and that is it.

So they each have two.

If you never thought sugar effects kids, come to my house when I let them have two cookies, long after lunch. My goodness. All four boys are in the room going wild, wrestling and screaming like hyenas. Floor shaking, wall trembling, and I feel sick from having two cookies, knowing I should have stopped at one.

I'm sick, they are in a sugar-induced frenzy. Totally not fair. Why can't I get sugar high anymore?

Waiting For Soccer

Why oh why I don't bother with gloves when wiping things down with bleach, I'll never know. My hands feel like I'm wearing shrunken skin right now. Guess I dislike gloves that much.

We're waiting for the soccer game to begin. Portsmouth V Southampton. I made these mint bath bombs last night that are clear in the other room but I can smell them. I'm hoping they turn out OK. This humidity has been such a pain. I thought I had my bomb recipe down good, but... alas, I am back to square uno.

Sigh

Don't... wanna.. move.

Just want to sit here and stare at the computer and not do all of the things I need to do. We got a new entertainment center and I had to move out the old stuff. Look at this mess!!

click for larger

What happens, though, is I get sidetracked. Somehow cleaning out the old stuff turned into cleaning out the closet. How'd that happen? So I got ONE shelf of the closet clean (it took that long) two days ago, and had to move on. Yesterday we were busy and had to leave most of the mess sit. Today I'd like to clear the rest of the mess out because I find messiness opressive.

But, then, I have no desire to move right now. Not helpful.

clean - shower - scramble up something for the crockpot for dinner - pack up order - make bath bombs - hand out fliers - soccer practice tonight -

On with my day.

The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time

by Marc Haddon

This was a Book Club pick. I got it from the library, not really knowing what to expect. A fantastic story of an autistic boy who sets out to find the killer of a neighbor's dog.

It was an interesting, funny and engaging read. I looked forward to picking the book up each time. Chris was a memorable character.

Would I re-read it? Quite possibly. I would definitely reccomend it.

Pacifier

I got this in an email forward and thought it was cute.

All of my kids used pacifiers, except for the twins. For my oldest son, we threw a Throw Away The Pacifier Party for him and gathered them all up, made a cake and tossed the dang things in the trash. We made it a big deal, and it worked.

Britney is Pregnant

So Britney Spears is officially pregnant. So glad all the guessing is over then. My daughter was driving me nuts about it. "Is she pregnant? Does she look pregnant? What do YOU think?!!" I guess, since she remembers when Britney came out and saw her popularity grow, she has a certain interest and fondness for her.

She doesn't seem to like her music, though.

But there's a familiarity, I guess. She said it was "cool" and don't I think so? Don't I think it is cool, too? For her it must be like watching a big sister grow up, get married and such. I have a different take on it. Though I honestly hope it has a grounding effect on her. The woman could very easily retire from the business and raise a family very comfortably.

Videos

Ever hear a song (before seeing the video) and it is slammin' so you think that the video will be too? But the video is not slammin'. I'm saying this because I just saw the video for Mariah Carey's new song, "It's Like That". I caught it on the radio a while back, and liked it right away, which is rare. Not sure about the lyrics, but the tune is catchy. I didn't really want to like it, since Mariah bugs me.

Anyway, just caught the video. Could it have been any less creative? I swear, you could pop that girl out of any of her videos and put her in a different one and it wouldn't matter. Slow-mo, hair blowing in the wind, gyrating and pushing her chest forward. Yeah. 'Bout sums it up.

I think I'm stalling on my shower here, is what I'm doing. Lalala.

Silicone Hot Pad

A while back I was at the store and saw they had silicone hot pads. They were kind of pricey (especially the glove kind), so I opted for a flat circular one to give it a try. I didn't like it. I could feel the heat from my iron skillet through it and felt like I was in constant danger of scalding my hand. I also felt like the handle was going to slip out of my hand.

So... crap. Waste of money. Or so I thought. Yeah - 'cause I found a new use for it, oh yes I did. I now slap it in the bottom of my sink to use for a drain plug. It is flat and big enough to cover the hole; works like a charm. And I've had such a hard time trying to find a plug that fit just right. Score, eh?

Crazy Kids

Why is it people always say that fresh air will tire a kid out? It only tires me out, darnnit. The past few days have been beautiful and we've spent oodles of hours outside, at the park, in the yard... and my kids are as wired and insane as ever, the little nerds.

I'm loving having the windows open, though and waving bye-bye to all the stuffy winter air that has been filling my home for months.

And now, my husband and I are going to settle in, drink wine, eat pizza and watch The Royal Tenenbaums.

Batches of Soaps

Spent some time making soap and here are some pictures. I'm posting them here because I can't keep up with having a crafty blog, this blog, book blog... blah. So I'm kind of slowly combining things.

Anyway... the log picture is the biggest. Clicking on any of them will take you to my Gallery to see a larger view.

And then the last one is of a test batch. Not the best picture, but it smells gooooood.
