Knitblog.com

Found this cool little fiber art community called knitblog. They have a small handful of bloggers. Very fun surfing (although a few are dead links). Big Geek here has got some totally beautiful yarn porn, finished projects and cute baby pictures. Fun stuff.

Tyra Banks Speaks Out About Her Weight

"I get so much mail from young girls who say, 'I look up to you, you're not as skinny as everyone else, I think you're beautiful,' " she says. "So when they say that my body is 'ugly' and 'disgusting,' what does that make those girls feel like?" - [link]

OK. So I'll admit. I'm not a big fan of Tyra. Never have been. With her recent show I've become even... less of a fan, if that is possible.

In fact, it appears that by adding a little padding, Banks the businesswoman has earned a bit of credibility: Her talk show is now entering its second season, and the most recent season of Top Model delivered its strongest ratings ever. "(TV execs) think it's better when I'm at 155 lbs. – at 145, they feel I'm not as relatable," she explains.

Well. Thanks for "relating" to us all. I'm not quite sure what to think of it. The cynic in me says it is what a lot of the coverage on celebs is: hype. People do crazy things just to gain attention, pimp their movies or... possibly up the ratings of their talk show.

Battling Obesity and Diabetes

We already know there is a T2 diabetes epidemic going on. We already know that obesity and inactivity are to blame. Instead of studying the issue over and over, from every conceivable angle, shouldn't researchers be focusing on how to stop this national health train wreck that we're seeing? Am I being unreasonable? You tell me. - [link]

I don't understand why healthy food costs so dang much in this country. That's my one major beef. Boiling all the way down to our local school district. Considering the kids are at school 5 days a week, here right? Most of them eat the lunch the school provides.

Lunch example 1:
Stuffed Cheese Sticks
Marinara Sauce
Apple Wedges
Orange Wedges

What in all that is Holy is that? What kind of lunch is that?!! That looks like a snack, and not a very good one at that. Maybe the apple. The orange. But... that is one of the weirdest "lunch" items I've seen in a long time.

Lunch example 2:
Hot Dog
French Fries
Peach Halves
Sherbet

Hot Dog? Seriously... hot dog? Everyone knows hot dogs are not nutritious, rather anti-nutritious. They are a waste product as far as food is concerned. Hot dog on sugar-laden, white wheat bun, soggy french fries, peaches soaked in sugar and sherbet. Talk about carb and sugar overload it is truly disgusting. I can't believe the menu we have. It is worse than fast food. I challenge the administration and staff to eat the same menu as the children do for an entire month and I bet they'd be feeling pretty darn crappy after the first few days.

Mind you, for some of these kids, this is the best (or only) meal they will have all day.

Shameful, really. I think that healthy, organic, whole foods should be fed to our children (including breakfast - some powerful brain food) when at school. For minimal cost. Does any district do this? Do all schools feed their children slop on a daily basis? I have no idea, but I, for one, am appalled at our school district for doing so.

If we want healthier adults then we have to have start with healthier children.

Riding The Bus With My Sister

Riding The Bus With My Sister

by Rachel Simon

I heard so many good things about this book and it looked like a quick read so I figured what the heck. Basically it is about a woman who, for a year, rides the buses with her mentally retarded sister. She meets some colorful characters and learns a bit about herself along the way.

There were moments where I thought I might care about the characters, but they were fleeting. I didn't find myself excited to pick up the book or wondering what happened. Just wasn't digging it much.

Gmail and Spam

gmailspam.gif

What on earth is up with the Gmail spam lately? It is driving me absolutely bonkers. Yesterday I had to sift through an entire screen of spam with even more on the second page. Gmail used to be SO much more effective at clearing some of this stuff out. What gives?

Right now I have over 11,000 emails in my spam box. I used to clear it out more but thought maybe if I left it that would be better? It says that messages left over 30 days will be deleted but I've yet to see that happen. There is some help info on reporting spam.

I love me some Gmail, I do. But it is making me dread checking my mail only to sort through 50 messages before I find one that isn't spam.

Chili Bake Casserole

This is an easy and delicious casserole. To save time, prepare the meat ahead. Great with a salad. This fed our five kids, my husband and myself with a bit of leftovers.

Ingrediants

1 pound of ground beef (you could use ground turkey, shredded chicken, etc.)
1 can chili beans (or kidney beans, black beans would do)
1 can chopped tomatoes
1 onion, chopped
2 cups of shredded cheddar cheese
1 package of taco seasoning
1 package of Jiffy corn muffin mix
1 egg + milk (for the corn muffins)

Take 1/2 cup of water and the taco seasoning, pour in pan and heat until thickened, stirring occasionally. Combine with drained beans and meat. (I did this right in the casserole dish to save a bowl.) Mix in tomatoes and onion and most of the cheese. Prepare corn muffin mix as directed; pour over the ingredients in the casserole pan, spreading it around a bit over the top. Sprinkle remaining cheese over top.

Bake uncovered at 375 for about 25 minutes or until corn mix is done and casserole is heated through.

Hillary Clinton Announces Presidential Bid

Hillary finally announces what we knew all along. She's going to run for da big seat in da White House.

"And I'm in to win," she added in a statement, announcing she has set up an exploratory committee that can gauge opinions and raise money for a presidential campaign. - site

But you knew this way back when, right? No big surprise.

The Chelsea Handler Show

shows_chelsea.jpg I love the Chelsea Handler Show. That woman cracks me up every time I catch her on. It is always at some weird time in the wee hours of the morning, though, so I don't get to see it often. But when I do her dry, sarcasm is right up my alley. I don't see any current air times for her. I certainly hope that they aren't thinking of cancelling that show.

43 Things

43 Things -- Write down your goals. Get Inspired. Share your progress.

Looks interesting. Make a list of 43 goals, keep track of them and peek in on other goals.

Some examples:

exercise - live in the moment - live healthier - write a novel - sleep under the stars - recycle - pay off debt - read 52 books in 52 weeks

I like it.

What are your life goals?
