Free Software | Main | Message From Ruben May 5, 2003Jewel, Ya Done Wrong, HoneySome May 5th (aka Cinco De Mayo) information: Okay. What the hell. You know, yesterday I was happy to discover that Jewel was releasing a new album. Now, though, I catch a glimpse of her video... all I can say is, "What. Happened?" Please tell me that you aren't crossing over, Jewel. Please. Tell me you're not turning into a Christina Aguilera that has to promote her body (shamlessly), instead of her God-given talent. I'm not a prude. That's not it. I just like some things to stay as they are. I realize who the "true talents" are. I expect tits and ass from J-Lo, or Britney. I don't, however, expect it from Jewel. I expect that my daughter can watch her videos without an ass/crotch shot thrown in her face. Dammit. What a dissapointment.

Yeah. I wish I could. I only saw the 2nd half of the video, where she was dancing in the rain with some back up dancers (looked as if they came from a P.Ditty video, straight to this one), and then the firemen came and hosed her (white) t-shirt down and...blah.

*speechless* (with open-jawed look of confusion on face)

Jewel was interviewed on one of the local DC stations last week-- I think the video is supposed to be a "spoof".

I was kind of thinking/hoping that's what it was, vegmom. I guess it wasn't "spoofy" enough for me to notice that, though.

I had the same reaction when I caught the 2nd half of the video too. Then I saw it from the beginning and listened to the lyrics and I can definitely see where it's a "spoof". I'm sure a bit more T&A were added (she is in the business to sell after all), but I thought it was right in keeping with the image she's created for herself thus far.

I love the new video. Jewel looks incredibly sexy. She makes great music and I hope she continues on that path. Hopefully her next big step will to get those teeth fixed.
Ok im done.

You mean you don't think Jewel's jacked up teeth are kind of quirky/sexy?

Jewel used to be a HUGE inspiration to me. She was one of the reasons Ifirst picked up a guitar, and I am the musician I am today because of her. That is why I was so outraged and disappointed when I saw her new video. The visionary that I once saw has now turned into just another joke. I too recognize talent for what it really is and Jewel had talent and she ruined herself and it makes me sick.

People, did you actually WATCH and COMPREHEND the video??? She's done something pretty freaking spectactular. She is satirizing glam and commercialism, and at the same time doing one HECK of a good job of glamorizing and commercializing herself, thus showing that anyone can do it.
Is her music a little more pop? Yes. Is that necessarily bad? No. Hey, I'm sure Jewel has to reflect at times on how her career is going, and sometimes she has to spice things up to ensure her income. Besides, she is an entertainer, after all. Last I heard, philosopher doesn't pay very well (I should know; that's my degree.)
