Rip Off?

Hmmm. I ordered some tomato plants from Woman's Day Magazine. My total came to $14.50, but I was charged $22.95.

Hmmmmm.

So, I get my plants, no instructions, no invoice. Nothing. I do a search on the company Spring River Nursery, hoping to find instructions on their website. Instead, I find this:

Hmmmmm. So, I call Woman's Day and there's a (non toll-free) number to call about orders. I push "0" and get the operator, to whom I tell my situation. She told me someone would get back to me.

And now I wait. Damn. I don't know how to plant these. I don't know if they're annuals, or what. And I'm now leery.

I bet they charged you for "shipping." They're good about that. I hate it when they don't give toll-free numbers. I think they do it on purpose. I ordered some Richard Simmons stuff before and had the same problem. A non-toll-free number discourages people from calling and causing trouble.

I had the same problem with Spring River Nursery, Hartford, Mi. I ordered some lavender plants and 10 or the 12 were dead. They will get back to me and I have heard nothing.

Called Spring River Nursery two times long distant, got the answering machine both times, saying they would get back to me, but they never did. I wanted to order 4 mandevilla plants but from the comments on the internet I think I will forget about it. I thought Womans Day Magazine would have reliable places to order from.

I ordered lavendar plants since Feb, 2002 and still have yet to receive them.

I ordered and received Spring River's SuperHardy Lavender plants, which were so small they did not survive. I do not have a phone number to call and make a complaint. I ordered them on March 9,04 and received them approximately 12th of April.

Thanks for the information, I was about to place an order and thought I would try to do it online, but I won't be ordering anything from this company!!

I was just getting ready to write the check for some lavender plants - guess I will rethink.

I definitely would not swing my business their way again. I never did reconcile my issues (the OVERCHARGE) - they dodged my calls... and my plants died.

I too ordered some of their lavender plants, 12 of them to be exact. Mailed the check April 7,2004, it cleared my bank 12 days later and here it is the 26th of April and still no plants. Will NEVER order from this company again and will spread the word that this is a ripoff business!!

I wish they would post this information on the Womans Day site. I too ordered plants from these guys and cant find out where they are. Had I seen this I would have never ordered 30 plants from them, back in February 2004!!!!

I ordered 3 (luckily only 3!) lavender plants and had the same problem - they were really small and died right away - I can't find a phone # or address - anyone have one?

Ordered 12 lavander plants on 3/1/04 received nothing as of 5/9/04. Sorry to read that you all had problems as well. Suggest that we all contact the Hardford MI chamber of commerse and the MI Attorney General.

Well . . . I did receive my 'Hardy Lavender plants'
But they're all dead! Foolish me . . . I payed by check!

I wish I would have looked up Spring River Nursery on the internet before I ordered my lavender plants. This is a great website...just too bad I didn't see it before I sent in my check. All 12 of my lavender plants are dead too! Did anyone get there money back?

Placed an order for the Lavender on March 16.....today is May 11 and still no word! The check($13.85) cleared shortly thereafter, but still no plants! Thanks for the address and phone number....Think I will e-mail the AG's office.........

on April !st,I also ordered 12 Lavender plant's,my check was also cashed on April 15th,I have yet to recieve my plant's.I never had a phone #.

On April 12, 2004 ordered 18 at $45.00 still no plants and the check cleared within days ... think i will also email the AG office and chamber of commerce... I held off ordering for awhile... always go with first instinct.. huh..

i ordered a garden from Woman's Day on 2/17/04. I never rec'd, can't get a call back, the 800# is a call center,,,this is definitely an AG issue!

My mother ordered Lavender plants the 20th of April this year. The bank told her the check was cashed but she still has not recieved her plants either. It sounds like this company needs a wake up call. Everyone needs to take the next step and contact the AG office, Better Business Bureau and even the Chamber of Commerce for Hartford Minn.

Same here...I ordered some lavender plants the end of March from Spring Nursery and they still haven't arrived. How frustrating!

spring River is actually a company- I called ES Enterprises, their mother company at 269-621-2447, and they were able to connect me to the customer service of Spring River -they said they are overwhelmed by orders and my lavender plants will be shipped at the end of the month. I mentioned that the number listed on the company's website never connected to customer service.. she didn't seem to care, neither did she care that there were so many people out there who thought the company was a fraud, guess I learned my lesson to check compnaies out before I send them money!

I am another victim of Spring River! I ordered fourteen plants, sent a check, and six weeks later, still no plants. I checked the Internet to search this company and found many complaints of fraud on www.ripoffreport.com. Is there any way we can get our money back or get this company busted for fraud?

I sent an email to Womans Day Magazine. I wait with great anticipation to see if they will refund my money or at the very least stop advertising for these RIP OFF artists. The 2 collections of plants I ordered were suppoed to be " Endorsed and Guaranteed by Womans Day" let's see what happens!!!!

I also ordered some laverder plants I places the order March 30,2004 the check cleared and about May 10,2004 I got the dead plants so much for their DOUBLE GUARANTEE with no return address no instructions and no telephone number how can you check on them. I will never trust anything from Spring River again

I also ordered from Woman's Day - two aets of 15 plants. $43 and they are giving me the run around. I emailed the magazine and called the toll-free ordering number.

I ordered the perenial gardens that were in Woman's Day... still waiting for them, so I called the toll free customer service # that WD supplied. I was told that someone would return my call. That never happened, so I demanded a telephone# to contact the nursery directly... and... it's SPRING RIVER!! I only got their answering machine, but left a message that has obviously fallen on deaf ears. Why does WD do business with such a shady company???? Hmmmmmmmm (I did pay with credit card, so will be disputing those charges if I don't receive happy plants and soon!)

ordered 18 lav. plants 4/5/04 sent check for 23.50 which was cashed recd 12 basby plants half were dead planted immed. they all died tried to contact spring river numerous times but to no avail.sen letter no response. the attorney gen should do something about companies lik this.

I ordered 12 plants, one was dead and two are questionable. It is very damp and cool here so I will be watching to see if they make it. It is the right time for planting in our state, so they sent them timelely. I am writing them to replace the three that were not in good shape. The plants were small. I do not know much about Lavender, but these are seedlings. I did not check this website out either, I guess I just took it for granted that it was a reputable nursery. I am glad the address is posted. There was no return address on the box, and I kept the advertisement, but not the address.

If they do not make it, I will ask for the return of my money. They sure are pretty in the picture:)

It's nice to know that other people are having problems with their orders. I ordered the penny violets through Woman's Day, received my order with no instructions other than to keep them moist until planting which I did right away. It's been a week and they're all dead. Obviously there's no use in calling to complain I'd just be out more money. Reputable nurseries have guarantees but obviously we're not dealing with a reputable company. If nothing else I'm going to let Woman's Day know that they should be looking for another nursery to work with.

I ordered "lavender plants" from Spring River Nursery on April 14, 2004,it is May 27,2004, and still no plants. Check was cashed! I will contactthe AG too. What a ripoff.

I also ordered Lavendar-received cancelled check and nothing else. Anybody have phone number and address of Spring River? Thanks

Well, I am responding to my earlier email up on top!
I planted all my lavender except 2. You guys are all "right", we have had rain up the whaazoo, little heat to burn them up, and mine too are all dead with one day!!

I will write them and complain, but I suppose it will go in the basket. Those seedlings that I got should of been in a pot and grown to a larger stage, then sent on to us. The root really did not have a good root base, do you all agree? Tiny hairs for roots if roots at all! Good way to make some "fast" money for Spring River. Those roots were just tiny and minute, not old enough to be put into the ground and planted. I at least got my plants, some of you did not even get that. I am very upset, as money is hard to come by these days. Barb

I am writing again. I received 12 plants, 2 were dead. I just looked at my check and I wrote it for $22.95. Does anyone remember if that was for 24 plants? I should of photocopied the order sheet. I too probably did not receive my whole order.

tHIS IS SO VERY INTERESTING. MY MOTHER ORDERED SOME LAVENDAR PLANTS ON 4-5-04. HER CHECK CLEARED THE CHEMICAL BANK SHORELINE ON 4-22-04. NO PLANTS HAVE BEEN RECIEVED. NO CALLS TO THE COMPANY ARE SUCCESSFUL. THIS IS NOTHING BUT A SCAM SO EVERYONE WHO IS READING THESE BEFORE SENDING A CHECK TO THIS COMPANY, BEWARE. YOU ARE GIVING AWAY YOUR MONEY.

I placed my order in March. My credit card was charged in April. I called the order # to get tracking info and they said that they'd have to fax the nursery. I asked if there was a # I could call. They gave me 269-621-2259. This number is constantly busy up until about 4:30 when then all it does is ring endlessly. This is not a reputable company we are dealing with and I am surprised that Woman's Day uses their company. After many attenpts at contacting the nursery this week, I called the order company again and questioned more thoroughly. I was told that they can issue a refund and I jumped at it. She tells me that I should see the credit within 2 weeks. I will notn let this go.

We as well feel like we were taken. Sent a check and received 12 plants only 3 survived of the Hearty Lavender Plants. Was looking for a address or phone # and found on this site. Thanks for all the info. Hope that everyone checks this site before ordering from this rip off company.

I got a refund, after writing to womans day and nicely talking to spring river, have any of you tried asking for your money back???
I did and it worked for me ... maybe now that they know there is a web site just for complaints for them they are trying harder......... everything we all complained about I think is being addressed, the notes on what to do with said plants, getting them to late...

I ordered lavender plants on 4/20/04. My check cleared the bank on 5/1/04 and I have yet to receive the plants. I kept a copy of the advertising but there is no phone number or address.

Ladies please call Spring River and ask for a refund I did and I received it on friday.

I am also one of the foolish ones who ordered the hardy lavenders and also one of many who did not recieve them. I sent a check for 22.95 on 4/28/04 and the check has cleared and it is 4/10/04 and still no plants. I guess I found this website a little too late.

I to have been ripped off- I did get a call from the Nursery as I contacted advertised promotion and they said they were sending my plants as soon as the memorial holiday was over Still no Plants- so sorry I didn't look up the web site earlier. I don't know why they are still in business and such a bad name for the town

I feel like I have been cheated. The ad was very attractive and the fact that they were "hardy lavender" plants made it all the more appealing.

I was surprised to hear of all the people that had trouble with Spring River. As of this date I have not received my plants. I am SO upset i plan on contacting the Better Business Bureau in Michigan.
How do companies get away with this??

there were 12 plants with shipping it came to 24.85, my credit card was charged on 5/18/04, they were not lavender plants. To date they have not been received, but I think I ordered them from Southern Living or Better Homes. I plan on contacting the credit card company post haste.

I appreciate this website and have learned my lesson. I called the number and they had a recording asking for my name & phone number stating they would return my call.
I'm not holding my breath.

I only wish that I saw this site before I ordered my 3 lavender plants ! My check was cashed in the first week of May, but I'm still waiting for my plants. We should all report them to the B.B.B.
