Proposed legislation would make it illegal for kids under the age of 18 to drink, even if they're with a parent. Later in the article: Lawmakers say the proposal would still allow parents to serve their kids alcohol in their own homes. And kids aged 18 to 20 would still be able to have a beer with their parents in a bar or restaurant.

I myself never could understand why any parent would condone their kids underage drinking much less encourage it by buying them drinks.. Don't get me wrong, on occasion I was allowed to have a sip or two of wine or some such but my parents never let me drink much at all when I was underage,,, and I am thankful for that...

I think the idea behind it is to take away the "lure of the forbidden" if you will. teenagers often drink to rebel, and maybe parents figure if they make less of a deal of it, kids are less likely to go overboard with it.
I'm curious to compare alcohol related fatalities/incidents in Europe with that of the States, or even in canada, where the drinking age is lower than that of the U.S. Does anybody know?
